Leviticus 16 is a pivotal chapter both theologically and ceremonially. The earlier chapters dealt only with the individual’s need for forgiveness and atonement. Now the corporate uncleanliness of the people is being addressed.<\/p>\n
This chapter describes the ceremony of the Day of Atonement or Yom Kippur<\/em> as it is known today. It was to be performed once a year for the combined sins of the whole nation. Here is also the source of the English concept of the scapegoat, which is a fascinating picture of the exchange of the life of the Son of God for the life of any person who will accept His terms of exchange.<\/p>\n We find in the New Testament, Hebrews 9, that the superior sacrifice of Jesus Christ was offered once-for-all rather than having to be required again each year. In fact, Jesus’ exchange never has to be repeated, and based on that one, perfect sacrifice, all forgiveness of sin, including that of Old Testament believers, was achieved.<\/p>\n “Lord, we remember what it cost You for our salvation and are humbled again. Create in us a clean heart this day so we might serve You well.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n =============================================================<\/p>\n\n\n\n Leviticus 16 KJV<\/p>\n\n\n\n 1<\/sup>\u00a0And the\u00a0LORD\u00a0spake unto Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they offered before the\u00a0LORD, and died;\u00a02<\/sup>\u00a0And the\u00a0LORD\u00a0said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy\u00a0place\u00a0<\/em>within the vail before the mercy seat, which\u00a0is\u00a0<\/em>upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat.\u00a03<\/sup>\u00a0Thus shall Aaron come into the holy\u00a0place:\u00a0<\/em>with a young bullock for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering.\u00a04<\/sup>\u00a0He shall put on the holy linen coat, and he shall have the linen breeches upon his flesh, and shall be girded with a linen girdle, and with the linen mitre shall he be attired: these\u00a0are\u00a0<\/em>holy garments;
