Ruth had surrendered herself to God in the first chapter. This verse in chapter 2 was a prayer, or a blessing, spoken over Ruth by Boaz, her kinsmen. It acknowledged that the rewards in her life were from the hand of God, and were a result of her surrendering to Him. How often do we stop to consider this truth for those who have surrendered to Him? Once we surrender to Him, then everything, everything<\/em>, we have is from His hand. Oswald Chambers said it this way:<\/p>\n

Once this is done [surrendering], the remainder of your life will exhibit nothing but the evidence of this surrender, and you never need to be concerned again with what the future may hold for you. Whatever your circumstances may be, Jesus is totally sufficient.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Boaz also used a familiar picture of God\u2019s protection found in the psalms to assure Ruth that God was taking care of her. \u201cUnder whose wings\u201d is a picture of safety and refuge:<\/p>\n

Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me!
\nFor my soul trusts in You;
\nAnd in the shadow of Your wings I will make my refuge,
\nUntil these calamities have passed by. (Psalm 57:1)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There is an enormous gap between what we<\/em> think we can do and what God<\/em> calls us to do in His kingdom. Our ideas of what we can do for Him, or even what we want<\/em> to do for Him, are trivial and insignificant in comparison to God’s ideas for us, which are huge and completely beyond our ability to accomplish. This fact helps us, when God’s desired results come about, to be only slightly<\/em> tempted to take the credit ourselves because we remember that it was impossible for us to have accomplished it on our own.<\/p>\n

“LORD, have Your way in us today. Do Your work as You see fit; we surrender afresh to Your direction and will.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

1<\/sup>\u00a0And Naomi had a kinsman of her husband\u2019s, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech; and his name\u00a0was\u00a0<\/em>Boaz.\u00a0\u00a02<\/sup>\u00a0And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi, Let me now go to the field, and glean ears of corn after\u00a0him\u00a0<\/em>in whose sight I shall find grace. And she said unto her, Go, my daughter.\u00a03<\/sup>\u00a0And she went, and came, and gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her hap was to light on a part of the field\u00a0belonging\u00a0<\/em>unto Boaz, who\u00a0was\u00a0<\/em>of the kindred of Elimelech.\u00a04<\/sup>\u00a0And, behold, Boaz came from Beth-lehem, and said unto the reapers, The\u00a0LORD\u00a0be\u00a0<\/em>with you. And they answered him, The\u00a0LORD\u00a0bless thee \u00a05<\/sup>\u00a0Then said Boaz unto his servant that was set over the reapers, Whose damsel\u00a0is\u00a0<\/em>this?\u00a06<\/sup>\u00a0And the servant that was set over the reapers answered and said, It\u00a0is\u00a0<\/em>the Moabitish damsel that came back with Naomi out of the country of Moab:\u00a07<\/sup>\u00a0And she said, I pray you, let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves: so she came, and hath continued even from the morning until now, that she tarried a little in the house.\u00a08<\/sup>\u00a0Then said Boaz unto Ruth, Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to glean in another field, neither go from hence, but abide here fast by my maidens:\u00a09<\/sup>\u00a0Let\u00a0<\/em>thine eyes\u00a0be\u00a0<\/em>on the field that they do reap, and go thou after them: have I not charged the young men that they shall not touch thee? and when thou art athirst, go unto the vessels, and drink of\u00a0that\u00a0<\/em>which the young men have drawn.\u00a010<\/sup>\u00a0Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes, that thou shouldest take knowledge of me, seeing I\u00a0am\u00a0<\/em>a stranger?\u00a011<\/sup>\u00a0And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband: and\u00a0how\u00a0<\/em>thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not heretofore.\u00a012<\/sup>\u00a0The\u00a0LORD\u00a0recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the\u00a0LORD\u00a0God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust.\u00a013<\/sup>\u00a0Then she said, Let me find favour in thy sight, my lord; for that thou hast comforted me, and for that thou hast spoken friendly unto thine handmaid, though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a014<\/sup>\u00a0And Boaz said unto her, At mealtime come thou hither, and eat of the bread, and dip thy morsel in the vinegar. And she sat beside the reapers: and he reached her parched\u00a0corn\u00a0<\/em>, and she did eat, and was sufficed, and left.\u00a015<\/sup>\u00a0And when she was risen up to glean, Boaz commanded his young men, saying, Let her glean even among the sheaves, and reproach her not:\u00a0\u00a016<\/sup>\u00a0And let fall also\u00a0some\u00a0<\/em>of the handfuls of purpose for her, and leave\u00a0them\u00a0<\/em>, that she may glean\u00a0them\u00a0<\/em>, and rebuke her not. 17<\/sup>\u00a0So she gleaned in the field until even, and beat out that she had gleaned: and it was about an ephah of barley. 18<\/sup>\u00a0And she took\u00a0it\u00a0<\/em>up, and went into the city: and her mother in law saw what she had gleaned: and she brought forth, and gave to her that she had reserved after she was sufficed.\u00a019<\/sup>And her mother in law said unto her, Where hast thou gleaned to day? and where wroughtest thou? blessed be he that did take knowledge of thee.
