King David sinned. And rather than turn to the Lord and repent at his first sin, he tried to cover his tracks, which caused him to sin more and more. By the end, he had gotten a married woman, Bathsheba, pregnant; tried to trick her husband into thinking he was the father; and when that failed, had her husband killed in battle. As a result, God told David that the child he had with Bathsheba would not live. David spent 7 days praying, fasting, mourning, and humbling himself before the Lord in the hopes that God might deliver his son from death. But God still said, \u201cNo.\u201d And the child died.<\/p>\n
We notice how David quietly accepted this discipline from the Lord. He got up, shaved, anointed himself, dressed, worshiped God, and then ate. He had repented and was again a man under submission, just as he had been in the days of Saul. He explained his seemingly disinterested behavior to his servants: \u201cCan I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.\u201d By faith in God\u2019s character, he relinquished his child to God and began to look to the future. David knew that he would be reunited with his infant son, and that they would ultimately spend eternity together with the Lord. We do believe babies go to heaven, not because they deserve it, but because of God’s grace.<\/p>\n
David\u2019s attitude reminds us of the true story of Horatio Spafford, the writer of the hymn, “It Is Well With My Soul.\u201d This hymn was written after 3 traumatic events in Spafford\u2019s life: the death of his only son in 1871; followed shortly by the Great Chicago Fire, which ruined him financially; and then in 1873 the death of his 4 daughters. Spafford had planned to travel to Europe with his family on the S.S. Ville du Havre<\/em>, but had to send them on ahead without him because he was delayed on business. While crossing the Atlantic, their ship collided with a sailing ship, the Loch Earn<\/em>, and sank rapidly. All 4 of Spafford’s daughters died. His wife, Anna, survived and sent him a telegram that read: “Saved alone.” Shortly afterwards, Spafford traveled to meet his grieving wife; and as the ship passed near where his daughters had drowned, he felt a comfort that could only be from God. He was inspired to write these words:<\/p>\n When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, \u201cLORD, please bless our lives today so that we may be a blessing to others.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n =============================================================<\/p>\n\n\n\n 2 Samuel 12 KJV<\/p>\n\n\n\n 1<\/sup>\u00a0And the\u00a0LORD\u00a0sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor.\u00a02<\/sup>\u00a0The rich\u00a0man\u00a0<\/em>had exceeding many flocks and herds:\u00a03<\/sup>\u00a0But the poor\u00a0man\u00a0<\/em>had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter.\u00a0\u00a04<\/sup>\u00a0And there came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him; but took the poor man\u2019s lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him.\u00a05<\/sup>And David\u2019s anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan,\u00a0As\u00a0<\/em>the\u00a0LORD\u00a0liveth, the man that hath done this\u00a0thing\u00a0<\/em>shall surely die:\u00a06<\/sup>\u00a0And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity. 7<\/sup>\u00a0And Nathan said to David, Thou\u00a0art\u00a0<\/em>the man. And the\u00a0LORDstruck the child that Uriah\u2019s wife bare unto David, and it was very sick.\u00a016<\/sup>\u00a0David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth.\u00a017<\/sup>\u00a0And the elders of his house arose,\u00a0and went\u00a0<\/em>to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.\u00a018<\/sup>\u00a0And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead: for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he would not hearken unto our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead?\u00a0\u00a019<\/sup>\u00a0But when David saw that his servants whispered, David perceived that the child was dead: therefore David said unto his servants, Is the child dead? And he brought forth the spoil of the city in great abundance.\u00a031<\/sup>\u00a0And he brought forth the people that\u00a0were\u00a0<\/em>therein, and put\u00a0them\u00a0<\/em>under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of Ammon.
