How should we answer this people who have spoken to me, saying, &#8220;Lighten the yoke which your father put on us&#8221;?'&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After Solomon\u2019s death, his son Rehoboam became king. The people came to him and asked that he lighten the hard service they had been under with his father Solomon. We notice that it says Rehoboam asked advice of both the old and young counselors, but nowhere does it say he sought God&#8217;s counsel. We shudder to think how often we have failed to seek God first, before all others. For this king, it was a decision that split the kingdom, and it never recovered.<\/p>\n<p>President Abe Lincoln said this about seeking the counsel of the Lord:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I am confident that the Almighty has His plans and will work them out . . . I have always taken counsel of Him, and referred to Him my plans, and have never adopted a course of proceeding without being assured, as far as I could be, of His approbation. I should be the most presumptuous blockhead upon this footstool if I for one day thought that I could discharge the duties which have come upon me since I came into this place, without the aid and enlightenment of One who is wiser and stronger than all others.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>How we need to remember to lean on the Lord and not our own understanding or the understanding of other mere mortals.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;LORD, keep us from our own self-confidence this day.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<p>=============================================================<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2 Chronicles 10 KJV<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>1<\/sup>\u00a0And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for to Shechem were all Israel come to make him king.\u00a0<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who\u00a0<em>was\u00a0<\/em>in Egypt, whither he had fled from the presence of Solomon the king, heard\u00a0<em>it\u00a0<\/em>, that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.\u00a0<sup>3<\/sup>\u00a0And they sent and called him. So Jeroboam and all Israel came and spake to Rehoboam, saying,\u00a0<sup>4<\/sup>\u00a0Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore ease thou somewhat the grievous servitude of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.\u00a0<sup>5<\/sup>\u00a0And he said unto them, Come again unto me after three days. And the people departed. <sup>6<\/sup>\u00a0And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye\u00a0<em>me\u00a0<\/em>to return answer to this people?\u00a0<sup>7<\/sup>\u00a0And they spake unto him, saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever.\u00a0<sup>8<\/sup>\u00a0But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him, that stood before him.\u00a0<sup>9<\/sup>\u00a0And he said unto them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, which have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us?\u00a0<sup>10<\/sup>\u00a0And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou\u00a0<em>it\u00a0<\/em>somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little\u00a0<em>finger<\/em>shall be thicker than my father\u2019s loins.\u00a0<sup>11<\/sup>\u00a0For whereas my father put a heavy yoke upon you, I will put more to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I\u00a0<em>will chastise you\u00a0<\/em>with scorpions.\u00a0<sup>12<\/sup>\u00a0So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king bade, saying, Come again to me on the third day.\u00a0<sup>13<\/sup>\u00a0And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men,\u00a0<sup>14<\/sup>\u00a0And answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add thereto: my father chastised you with whips, but I\u00a0<em>will chastise you\u00a0<\/em>with scorpions.\u00a0<sup>15<\/sup>\u00a0So the king hearkened not unto the people: for the cause was of God, that the\u00a0LORD\u00a0might perform his word, which he spake by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat. <sup>16<\/sup> And when all Israel\u00a0<em>saw\u00a0<\/em>that the king would not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? and\u00a0<em>we have\u00a0<\/em>none inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel:\u00a0<em>and\u00a0<\/em>now, David, see to thine own house. So all Israel went to their tents.\u00a0<sup>17<\/sup>\u00a0But\u00a0<em>as for\u00a0<\/em>the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.\u00a0<sup>18<\/sup>Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram that\u00a0<em>was\u00a0<\/em>over the tribute; and the children of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died.
