King Ahasuerus of Persia removed his queen for disobeying him, and sought a new queen to replace her. He chose Esther, a Jewess, who was the cousin and adopted daughter of Mordecai. Mordecai overheard a plot 2 of the king’s eunuchs were making to kill the king. He told Esther, who in turn told the king. The 2 eunuchs were caught and given the death penalty. Although it simply says that they were “hanged on a gallows,” secular history tells us that Persian executions were brutal, with the victims usually being impaled on a stake. The Persians were also the inventors of crucifixion, but, like the Romans, used it only on their enemies and not their own citizens.<\/p>\n
We see through these events, and the entire book of Esther, God’s providential control in the life of the king and the future of the Jews. The plot to kill the king, along with Mordecai’s role in stopping it, were “written in the book of the chronicles,” which was the government’s record of events. Five years later the king would read these records, and it would bring about a turning point in the fate of the Jews as a whole.<\/p>\n
When we are learning to read as children, we quickly discover that the opening chapters of a novel are often a little confusing. New characters are being introduced and facts added that don’t seem to make any sense at first. But we learn to read on because a good author will weave it all together by the end of the book. At times the life of faith is much the same. We are introduced to new people and events that don’t make any sense at the moment. Things happen that seem to be counterproductive to our faith and the faith of others. But if we will simply keep walking in faith, we know that our Author will make sense of it all by the end, bringing everything into proper focus.<\/p>\n
“LORD, help us to keep walking in faith this day, even if the road seems to go through deep and dreary places.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n =============================================================<\/p>\n\n\n\n Esther 2 KJV<\/p>\n\n\n\n 1<\/sup>\u00a0After these things, when the wrath of king Ahasuerus was appeased, he remembered Vashti, and what she had done, and what was decreed against her.\u00a02<\/sup>Then said the king\u2019s servants that ministered unto him, Let there be fair young virgins sought for the king:\u00a03<\/sup>\u00a0And let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather together all the fair young virgins unto Shushan the palace, to the house of the women, unto the custody of Hege the king\u2019s chamberlain, keeper of the women; and let their things for purification be given\u00a0them:\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0\u00a04<\/sup>\u00a0And let the maiden which pleaseth the king be queen instead of Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he did so. 5<\/sup>\u00a0Now\u00a0<\/em>in Shushan the palace there was a certain Jew, whose name\u00a0was\u00a0<\/em>Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite;\u00a06<\/sup>\u00a0Who had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captivity which had been carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.\u00a0\u00a07<\/sup>\u00a0And he brought up Hadassah, that\u00a0is\u00a0<\/em>, Esther, his uncle\u2019s daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the maid\u00a0was\u00a0<\/em>fair and beautiful; whom Mordecai, when her father and mother were dead, took for his own daughter.\u00a0\u00a08<\/sup>\u00a0So it came to pass, when the king\u2019s commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together unto Shushan the palace, to the custody of Hegai, that Esther was brought also unto the king\u2019s house, to the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.\u00a09<\/sup>\u00a0And the maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness of him; and he speedily gave her her things for purification, with such things as belonged to her, and seven maidens,\u00a0which were\u00a0<\/em>meet to be given her, out of the king\u2019s house: and he preferred her and her maids unto the best\u00a0place\u00a0<\/em>of the house of the women.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a010<\/sup>\u00a0Esther had not shewed her people nor her kindred: for Mordecai had charged her that she should not shew\u00a0it\u00a0<\/em>.\u00a011<\/sup>\u00a0And Mordecai walked every day before the court of the women\u2019s house, to know how Esther did, and what should become of her.\u00a012<\/sup>\u00a0Now when every maid\u2019s turn was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished,\u00a0to wit\u00a0<\/em>, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with\u00a0other\u00a0<\/em>things for the purifying of the women;)\u00a013<\/sup>\u00a0Then thus came\u00a0every\u00a0<\/em>maiden unto the king; whatsoever she desired was given her to go with her out of the house of the women unto the king\u2019s house.\u00a014<\/sup>\u00a0In the evening she went, and on the morrow she returned into the second house of the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king\u2019s chamberlain, which kept the concubines: she came in unto the king no more, except the king delighted in her, and that she were called by name. 15<\/sup> Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to go in unto the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king\u2019s chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed.
