In this psalm, David described how a good ruler is a source of refreshment for the people he rules over. We believe David was speaking of the Messiah coming and ruling on earth, but it is true of human rulers as well. Just as rainfall brings and sustains life in the land, God will bless a nation through a godly ruler. This alone is a powerful reason for wise people to vote for godly officials.<\/p>\n
Down through America’s history, it has usually looked for godliness as a defining characteristic in its officials. Regrettably, it hasn’t always chosen the godly one, but thank God, there have been many who were. One such official, by age 15, was already working as a professional surveyor far beyond the Blue Ridge Mountains. The wilderness had a profound impact on him, testing his endurance and forcing him to improvise to meet unexpected challenges as he opened wide new expanses of land for the nation. By age 21, he was a major in the Colonial Army and fought during the French and Indian War. His bravery made him a living legend, when in one battle, he had 2 mounts shot out from under him and his hat and uniform riddled with bullet holes. In 1775, after the first shots between the redcoats and the minutemen were fired at Lexington and Concord, the second continental congress unanimously elected him as commander-in-chief of the continental army. Why? Because he was the type of godly man who never quits, no matter how difficult the odds. History records that George Washington was a man of prayer and our nation was refreshed because of his commitment to God.<\/p>\n
