Nahum 1:7: “The LORD is good, / A stronghold in the day of trouble; / And He knows those who trust in Him.”
December 1st, 2021 by Pastor Ed in devotionalThis is a great verse to teach kids early in their journey along the road of life. The Scriptural truth that God is good will be a point of attack by the enemy in every believer’s life over and over again. It was the tactic Satan used when he tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden. When Satan said to her, “Has God said ‘Do not eat?’” he was basically saying, “Eve, God is trying to spoil your fun and doesn’t want you to have a good time. That is the only reason He is telling you not to do that!” He was trying to convince her that God wasn’t good. This verse reminds us of the simple but profound truth that our heavenly Father is good and that He is for us. This brings peace and joy to our hearts and can especially serve as our stronghold in time of trouble.
A little boy was complaining to his grandma that everything in his life was going wrong. He was having problems in school, with his brothers and sisters, and even with his friends. While he was talking, his grandma was baking a cake. Finally she asked him if he would like a snack. “Yes, please,” he said. “Here, have some cooking oil,” she said. “Yuck” said the boy. “How about a couple raw eggs?” she asked. “That’s gross, grandma!” “Would you like some flour then? Or maybe some baking soda?” “Grandma,” the boy replied, “those things are all yucky!” “Yes,” she said, “all these things seem bad by themselves. But when they are put together in the right way, they make a wonderfully delicious cake! God works the same way. Many times we wonder why he would let us go through such bad and difficult times. But as we trust Him, despite our circumstances, eventually everything works together to make something wonderful!”
Asaph said it this way in his Psalm:
Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.
But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;
I had nearly lost my foothold.
For I envied the arrogant
When I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong.
They are free from common human burdens;
They are not plagued by human ills . . .
till I entered the sanctuary of God;
Then I understood their final destiny.
(Psalm 73:1–5,17)
It is critical for us to stay in fellowship with other believers because it helps to keep us from slipping and doubting. God both knows and loves us “who trust in Him.”
“LORD, we thank You for Your everlasting love this day, in Jesus’ name.”
