Jeremiah 2:12–13: “‘Be astonished, O heavens, at this, / And be horribly afraid; / Be very desolate,’ says the LORD. / ‘For My people have committed two evils: / They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, / And hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water.'”
October 1st, 2024 by Pastor Ed in devotionalWe have all been guilty of trying to find solutions to our problems outside of asking God for help. God calls Himself here the “fountain of living waters,” so why do we go somewhere else for satisfaction and help besides Him? Most, if not all, addictive habits are the result of trying to satisfy a thirst in our soul by some means other than God. Our ability to serve the Lord is directly proportional to our trust and commitment to Him and His word.
Are we trying to live between 2 worlds? Are we trying to follow God’s value system and the world’s at the same time? C. S. Lewis summarized it well when he said:
Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered to us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.
“LORD, forgive us for being too easily pleased with the trinkets of this world. Give us eyes to see eternity today we ask, in Jesus’ name.”
