Habakkuk 1:12–13: “Are You not from everlasting, / O LORD my God, my Holy One? / We shall not die. / O LORD, You have appointed them for judgment; / O Rock, You have marked them for correction. / You are of purer eyes than to behold evil, / And cannot look on wickedness. / Why do You look on those who deal treacherously, / And hold Your tongue when the wicked devours / A person more righteous than he?”
December 4th, 2021 by Pastor Ed in devotionalGod told His prophet Habakkuk that He was going to use the ungodly Chaldean nation to be His instrument of discipline on His people. This perplexed Habakkuk since the Babylonians themselves were guilty of idolatry and prideful self-sufficiency. Even so, he trusted in God’s character, using the title “Rock” to describe God as unmoving, unchanging, predictable, and powerful.
God guaranteed Habakkuk that the Babylonians day of destruction would come as well. God is righteous and was limiting Himself, in this instance, to using human vessels that were flawed and sinful. We, like Habakkuk, do not fully comprehend the sovereign workings of God; but also like Habakkuk, we can express complete faith and trust in our Lord. We believe that He still moves in holiness and justice even when we don’t understand it.
The day is coming when God will restore the world to Himself and right all wrongs. Revelation 21:4 tells us that Jesus “will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” (NIV). But until then, we must accept today’s realities and keep trusting God and looking forward to His return.
“LORD, we trust You because, as the Apostle Peter said so long ago, ‘You alone have the words of eternal life.'”
