Matthew 21:42: Jesus said to them, ‘Have you never read in the Scriptures: / “The stone which the builders rejected / Has become the chief cornerstone. / This was the Lord’s doing, / And it is marvelous in our eyes.'”

This Scripture brings to mind how the gifted artist Michelangelo took a single block of marble and created his famous sculpture David. History tells us that he completed the work when he was just 29. He transformed a piece of marble that 2 other sculptors had tried to carve but had rejected as too flawed. Michelangelo overcame those problems, and with his talented hands, the “flawed” stone that the other sculptors had tossed aside, became perhaps the most famous sculpture in the world of art.

Jesus is the foundation stone of the kingdom of God, on which the whole building, His church, rests. These religious leaders in the 1st century had fallen prey to a mistake that still stumbles most people on earth today, rejecting the most critical part of God’s design for their lives—Jesus Christ.

For personal application, the Cornerstone is also the Sculptor and we are the flawed pieces of marble. Thank God that He is the supreme Sculptor and is able to take broken, chipped, flawed humans and turn them into works of art for His kingdom. But we are living stones, and must chose to submit to the chisel and mallet of the Artist. He never forces Himself on our lives—His unfolding work of art. He waits for us, the living stones, to yield to His strong hands.

“JESUS, we recognize that You are the Master Sculptor and submit to Your way in our lives this day.”
