Romans 10:9–11: “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes to righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made to salvation. For the Scripture says, ‘Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.'”
May 5th, 2022 by Pastor Ed in devotionalThere is truth in the old saying, “Confession is good for the soul.” Confession is more than just saying words, it is what those words really mean to us. Confession contains the idea of agreeing with something. When we confess the Lord Jesus, we agree with what Father God said about Jesus, and with what Jesus said about Himself. But it’s even more than just an acknowledgment that Jesus is God; the Book of James tells us that even the demons grasp that much. To confess the Lord Jesus is to believe all of this and then to also surrender to Him as Lord, Master, and Sovereign.
It is correct to say that without the resurrection of Jesus Christ, there is no salvation. Because to “believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead” is to accept the resurrection as proof that Jesus’ ministry was genuine. It proves that Jesus is who He claimed to be and that Father God accepted Jesus’ sacrifice in the place of sinners. And since Jesus did rise from the dead, we can trust that the great exchange of His life for ours is complete.
The Apostle Paul has already lain out that righteousness is not attainable by doing good works. Instead, salvation comes by confessing and believing in the person and work of Jesus Christ. So confession and belief together result in righteousness and salvation. The last statement is so sweeping that it can offend anyone who has tried to gain salvation by good works. We shall live for eternity with Him because we have believed and confessed.
“LORD Jesus, we look to You alone, we trust in You alone for life. Live in us and through us this day we ask in Jesus’ name.”
