1 Corinthians 2:9–10: “But as it is written: ‘Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, / Nor have entered into the heart of man / The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.’ But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.”

We often find this verse from Isaiah 64:4 used in reference to the wonders of heaven that await the believer. Certainly there is truth in that application, but Paul the Apostle quoted it here to refer to all the wisdom God has available for believers here and now on planet earth. This verse tells us that wisdom cannot be found by observation: “Eye has not seen,” meaning there is little objective, empirical evidence. Wisdom cannot be heard: “Nor ear heard,” meaning God’s truthful wisdom is not discoverable by physical hearing in the ear. Wisdom cannot be discovered by the human mind: “Nor have entered into the heart of man,” meaning it is not available by the intellect of man striving to grasp it.

Empirical science today believes that reason + empirical testing + observation = truth. It believes that all truth is discoverable by dissection and that nothing exists outside the material world; therefore, everything can be understood by mechanistic means. However, Paul counters that godly wisdom cannot be uncovered solely by subjective, rational thought. This body of non-material truth is not discoverable by natural processes. But God has revealed it to us by His Spirit.

As Sir Isaac Newton (1642–1727) said, “As a blind man has no idea of colors, so have we no idea of the manner by which the all-wise God perceives and understands all things.” God the Holy Spirit Himself instructs us with the word of God, which leads us into truth and wisdom that will change our lives. When we discover the wisdom of God, life takes on excitement and adventure like nothing we ever dreamed possible before. His truth sets us free to become everything He desires us to be.

“LORD, please give us Your wisdom so that we can be useful to You this day by serving others.”
