Genesis 24:7: “The LORD God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my family, and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, ‘To your descendants I give this land,’ He will send His angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there.”

At 140 years old, Abraham was reminding himself and his servant that God had promised him many descendants and that they would obtain the land of Canaan. Since God Almighty had made the promise, Abraham fully expected God to supply just the right wife for his son Isaac. Abraham’s confidence was based on God’s spoken word to him, not some personal desire of Abraham’s. Over the years, he had learned to trust God. Trust is absolutely essential if we are to be led by God, because we will never maintain our commitment to obey and wait on Him unless we put our confidence in Him fully.

Abraham believed that God would provide a wife for his son, so he sent his servant back to his father’s house to find her. The odds of this venture succeeding in the natural were very low. What were the chances of success 4000 years ago? The hazards to Abraham’s servant alone, as he traveled 600 miles, would be enough to make it unlikely. But then he had to also somehow find a qualified young woman from within Abraham’s own family, convince her and her family (who had never met the groom-to-be) to let her travel 600 miles and marry an unknown relative. Most people, even in our day, would say, “No way!” But here Abraham expected God to do that very thing, and he also expected God to provide a guide, an angel.

Many people express a trust in God, but their trust is that God will provide what they want and desire. God honors trust in His word! We must trust that He will provide everything necessary to fulfill His will for our life in His own way. That is what Abraham did. Abraham stated his trust in God’s providential care to provide just the right wife for Isaac. What are you trusting God for today? Make sure it is based on God’s promises in His word.

“LORD, we choose to trust in You, Your character this day, and follow You wherever You lead.”
