Genesis 39:2–3: “The LORD was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. And his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD made all he did to prosper in his hand.”

The phrase, “The LORD was with Joseph,” is repeated 4 times in this chapter. It was obvious to all around Joseph that God was blessing his life. But God’s blessing didn’t exempt him from trials. He was in Egypt because his own brothers had sold him into slavery, and in Genesis 39 he was falsely accused and jailed for a crime he didn’t commit, adultery. God was forging Joseph’s character on the anvil of adversity. He was using difficult circumstances to prepare Joseph for a world-class task. He later became a world leader, but at this point, he was still very early in his development.

Everything happened to Joseph according to God’s exact schedule. From Joseph’s perspective, it must have seemed like everything was out of control. Yes, he was in the fire but the fire was a very carefully God-controlled burn. He was growing and learning from each test that he passed. He was maturing and developing into the man that God intended to produce. Joseph was learning to walk in faithfulness to others, starting with his faithfulness in the little things while he served in Potiphar’s home.

That was God’s way then, and it is still His way today. God calls us into the same school of learning faithfulness that He called Joseph into. Today is the day to be faithful. If we have failed in the past, then we need to start being faithful today in some small thing. We will all find that which was true of Joseph will become true in our lives: “The LORD was with Joseph.” He will be with us too.

“LORD, we want to be Your faithful servant today. Give us all that we need to serve you with excellence and with all of our hearts.”
