Psalm 93:4: “The LORD on high is mightier / Than the noise of many waters, / Than the mighty waves of the sea.”

God’s strength and might greatly exceeds that of any pounding surf or tsunami. But the many storms of life, by their sheer power, sometimes throws a person into thinking otherwise. When we struggle, we have a tendency to take our eyes off the Lord and put them onto the waves crashing over the sides of our boat. It is then that we need to stop and take a quiet moment to reflect on the great truth of this verse. The power of crashing waves or cascading waterfalls is nothing compared to the power of the King.

Iguazu Falls, on the border of Brazil and Argentina, is a spectacular waterfall system made up of 275 separate falls along the 1.67 miles (2.7 km) of the Iguazu River. Carved into a wall on the Brazilian side of the falls is the Revised Standard Version of this verse: “Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the Lord on high is mighty!” Below the Scripture some wise believer chiseled these additional words: “God is always greater than all of our troubles.” It does not matter how high the floods of life come up over our head, the Lord of all creation remains above them all.

“You, O LORD, are our strength and protection on the road of life this day. We gladly submit to Your Lordship over every detail, no matter how small, that You desire to lead us in.”
