1 Samuel 20:3: “Then David took an oath again, and said, ‘Your father certainly knows that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said, “Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.” But truly, as the LORD lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.'”

David was conscious that his life was hanging by a thread, and that is in fact true of us all, though we don’t usually like to think of it. When we are young, we especially have a tendency to think we are immortal. Yet when we come to the Lord and give our lives to Him, we begin to realize that our life is literally in the hand of God.
None of us knows when our heavenly Father might withdraw His hand and take us. We are all standing on the very edge, the border, the boundary of eternity, and we should live every minute like it may be our last. We need to live with a consciousness of the eternal, motivated in our service to the Lord, inspired to live a pure life, keeping short accounts with God and being faithful to Him. Not long ago I read about a tombstone in memory of a young man who died at the age of 17. It read, “Reader, stop and think; I am in eternity and you are on the brink.” A young man, only 17 years of age, suddenly gone from earth and catapulted into eternity.
“LORD, help us to live today like it is our last day on planet earth. Use us to change the eternal destiny of someone this day, we ask.”
