1 Chronicles 7:27: “Nun his son, and Joshua his son.”

Joshua, from the tribe of Ephraim, was Moses’ right hand man. He was the son of a man named Nun. The word Nun means posterity, which seems to point us to his son Joshua. We know almost nothing about this father, but some have suggested that a man can be known by looking at his children. If this is true, then we can make a few assumptions about Joshua’s father. He must have invested much spiritual time into Joshua as a young man. Even the name he chose for his son speaks of his close, personal relationship with the Lord. Joshua literally means God the Savior. Joshua had the heart of a servant but was also a great warrior and man of God, eventually leading the people of God into the Promised Land.

It’s possible Nun had the same heart toward his child as the parents of this modern day girl did. Her story encourages parents and believers that they can influence kids for good. In a rural area of New Mexico, Sandra was raised in an adobe house without electricity or running water. Her father had to drive her mother 200 miles to the closest hospital in El Paso to give birth to her. They lived too far away to send Sandra to school, so her parents homeschooled her during her early school days. This allowed her to grow up in a very wholesome environment. One of the things her parents included in her education were trips for the whole family to walk through every state capitol west of the Mississippi. Sandra was later admitted to Stanford University where she graduated with honors. She then became the first woman to be seated in the Supreme Court of the United States of America. Sandra Day O’Connor reached this position in part because her parents taught her to see herself as created in the image of God, which meant she could be all that God wanted her to be.

“LORD, help us to reach out to the young among us today and give them an encouraging word or action so that they might see You more clearly through us.”
