Psalm 114:7–8: “Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, / At the presence of the God of Jacob, / Who turned the rock into a pool of water, / The flint into a fountain of waters.”

The point of these 2 references from Exodus 17:6 and Numbers 20:8 is that just as God provided for His people by bringing water out of the rocks in the wilderness, so will He continue to provide for the needs of His people today. What God desires for our lives will happen since nothing can get in the way of His plans for us. The barrier of the Red Sea, the lack of water in the wilderness, neither were too difficult for God to overcome on behalf of His people, and there are no barriers in our lives today that He cannot remove. If necessary, He can effortlessly move the whole earth to make a way for us to do His will. It is certainly easy for the Creator to suspend, adjust, and tweak the very laws of nature that He created. And the only proper response we can make before Him is to tremble (as in an earthquake).

It seems the problem is never with the inanimate creation, since it obeys God’s every command, but it is the animate creation, humanity, that often resists Him: “You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you” (Acts 7:51). Sometimes, when we allow fear or doubt to cloud our minds and hearts, we get in the way of God’s plans for our lives. It is then that we should remind ourselves that He is the God who turns “the rock into a pool of water.” And sometimes it is simply sin, stubborn disobedience against God that gets in the way. We all fall down occasionally, but our heavenly Father’s love and grace is always calling us to stand back up and walk with Him again.

We thank You, LORD, for Your love, mercy, and faithfulness to us even when we are not faithful toward You. Please forgive us.”
