Psalm 123:2: “Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters, / As the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, / So our eyes look to the LORD our God, / Until He has mercy on us.”

David uses the picture of a servant, or slave, waiting on and carefully watching the banquet table of his master to illustrate this truth. Whenever the master glances at the servant and gestures toward something, the good servant is watching and responds willingly. Our relationship to our Lord should also be like that of a slave to a master. Oh, yes, we became children of God when we surrendered our lives to Him and He is our heavenly Father, but He will also always remain God Almighty and our Master.
A slave-to-master relationship brings great freedom in one sense; a slave doesn’t suffer with any delusions of self-reliance. We find peace when we finally grasp that we need God like a slave needs his benevolent master who has promised to take excellent care of him. The Apostle Paul wrote, “My God shall supply all of your needs according to His riches in glory” (Phil. 4:19). For centuries believers have been encouraging one another with this truth-filled saying: “Where God guides, He always provides.” If you’re trying to do God’s will, He will provide for you every step of the way, so that if one door doesn’t open, another one will.
George Mueller was a man of God who understood Philippians 4:19 well. It began one day when he was moved with concern as he looked down the streets of Bristol, England and saw hundreds of homeless children. With only 2 pence (about 3 cents) in his pocket, he prayed, and in obedience to God, started an orphanage. Over the next 60 years, George Mueller cared for and raised more than 10,000 orphans. Mueller told amazing stories of answered prayers. He kept a daily prayer record that filled more than 3,000 pages and recorded more than 30,000 specific answered prayers. One of the best known was the night there was no food in the orphanage to give to the children for breakfast. But at 3:00 in the morning, a baker called and said, “I just can’t sleep. I’m going down to the bakery to bake some bread. Would it be all right for me to bring some over to you this morning?” A milk truck just happened to break down in front of the orphanage on a day when they had no milk. The truck driver came to the door and said, “This milk is all going to spoil. Could you use some?” Over and over again, 30,000 times, in 60 years, God answered George Mueller’s prayers. Prayers do get results: “This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him; / And saved him out of all his troubles” (Psalm 34:6).
“LORD, please give us spiritual eyes to see what You would have us do this day for You.”
