Psalm 143:11: “Revive me, O LORD, for Your name’s sake! / For Your righteousness’ sake bring my soul out of trouble.”

David prayed for 3 things in this verse: deliverance, understanding, and spiritual revival. Every believer needs spiritual revival; those necessary, reoccurring times when we require a fresh invasion from heaven, bringing us a renewed conscious awareness of God.

Many years ago a lady boldly asked American evangelist Billy Sunday about revivals: “Why do you keep having revivals when it doesn’t last?” She of course meant the public kind being held in large venues, but his response fits this verse we are considering. He asked her in return, “Why do you keep taking baths?” We keep seeking revival from the Lord because we keep getting dirty and discouraged as we walk through this sin-filled world.

I love this quote by Andrew Murray (1828–1917). Although he has been with the Lord for almost 100 years, many of his books are still in print, including the classic With Christ In The School Of Prayer. During a low period in his life, he wrote the following helpful words:

He brought me here. He will keep me here. He will make this trial a blessing. He will bring me out again. Therefore, I am here by God’s appointment, in His keeping, under His training, for His time.

“LORD, please revive us so that we can be consciously aware of what Your Spirit is prompting us to be and do today.”
