Psalm 145:3–4: “Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; / And His greatness is unsearchable. / One generation shall praise Your works to another, / And shall declare Your mighty acts.”

David challenges us through this psalm to search out God’s greatness, assuring us that God is so immense, we will never be able to discover His full magnitude. David also encourages us that we must pass this information on as part of a spiritual heritage to younger generations. We don’t have to have children of our own to do this because Sunday-school teachers are needed in virtually every church in the world.

When my own 2 daughters were very little, my wife and I began by teaching them a simple prayer before meals: “God is great. God is good. Let us thank Him for our food.” My wife is particularly careful to remember to remain truly thankful for even the little things in life. Her constant modeling of being spiritually thankful in all things, all the time, has been successfully instilled into our kids, and me. Joshua also understood his responsibility to pass on truth to his whole family. He said so in Joshua 24:15: “And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve . . . But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” Every new generation is faced with the same challenge to involve their entire households in serving the Lord.

“LORD, help us to be thankful for Your many blessings and model that thankfulness before a watching world this day, in Jesus’ name.”
