Proverbs 7:1: “My son, keep my words, / And treasure my commands within you.”

The word here for treasure comes from the Hebrew word for protectively hiding someone or something of great importance. It is the same word used in Exodus 2:2 to describe how baby Moses was hidden for the first 3 months of his life. We are again encouraged to take in these teachings, these proverbs or wise sayings, as being of great value, hiding them in our hearts. We are told to treat this Bible as the great treasure it is.

Some years ago I read about a man in Kansas City, Missouri, who was severely injured in an explosion, which left his face badly disfigured. He lost his eyesight as well as both hands. He was a new believer, and was greatly disappointed that he could no longer read the Bible, without his hands he was also unable to read Braille. Then someone told him of a woman in England who read Braille with her lips. Hoping to do the same, he sent for some books of the Bible in Braille. However, he quickly found that the nerve endings on his lips had also been destroyed in the explosion. But as he brought one of the Braille pages to his lips, his tongue happened to touch a few of the raised characters and he could feel them. He laughed out loud in excitement, as he discovered that he could treasure and read the Scripture with the end of his tongue. The man then read through the entire Bible 4 times!

Asking the LORD to give us a love for His Word is a perfectly reasonable request. When we treasure His word, it motivates us to study it, store it, and live it. Truly treasuring God’s Word is a powerful defense against the lures and lies of Satan.

“LORD, give us a deeper love and hunger for Your Word. We desire to be like You and to understand Your ways so that we can follow You more closely.”
