Ezekiel 3:26: “I will make your tongue cling to the roof of your mouth, so that you shall be mute and not be one to rebuke them, for they are a rebellious house.”

Here God did something very strange. He called Ezekiel to be a prophet and then made him mute, unable to speak. Compared to the other prophets, God had him do very little speaking. Instead he communicated God’s message mainly through acting out parables of truth, or what we might call today, “street theater.” Evidently Ezekiel’s muteness lasted for over 7 years, and during that time he only spoke when God gave him a specific message to deliver to the people.

God also called Ezekiel a “watchman,” someone who warns people of danger. Certainly God wants all of us to be “watchmen,” people who hear and read the word of the Lord, and then, knowing the urgency of the hour, warn people. What God has prepared for us in eternity is incomparable with what this life has to offer. Too often we hang on to the shiny bobbles, glittering trinkets, and pretty glass beads of this world, none of which will last. Keith Green sang:

And if this world took six days and that home took two thousand years
Hey man, this is like living in a garbage can compared to
What’s going up there

Father God is longing for that day, when we will be together with Him, but first He wants to touch this sin-sick world. So He leaves us here for a time. While here, we are to be a yielded instrument in His hand, through which He can touch the needy world around us. When we have accomplished the purposes of God for our lives, then the Lord will take us home. He is only leaving us here for the one purpose of serving Him to reach those not yet in touch with His heart.

“LORD, we do want to be useful to You, telling others of Your great love and the dangers of living only for this world. Use us today we ask in Jesus’ name.”
