Ezekiel 35:1–2: “Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying, “Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir and prophesy against it,”

Mount Seir was another name for the nation of Edom, which was directly east of Israel, extending from the Dead Sea down to the modern Gulf of Aqaba. Its main cities were Teman and Petra. Edom was considered Israel’s bitter enemy, and history records that in 588 BC the Edomites sided with Babylon in their assault against Judah. It seems the Edomites boasted that they were taking the mountains of Israel. God held them accountable for their actions against His people, and Edom was completely destroyed.

Modern observers see that there are no longer any Edomites but that there is a modern state of Israel, where Jews have returned to the land just as the Bible predicted they would in the last days. That simple fact should cause any honest inquirer to carefully study all the claims the Bible makes about an individual person’s life as well as a nation’s life.

America’s greatest presidents have had valuable comments to make about the importance of the Bible:

It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.
George Washington

That Book, sir, is the rock on which our republic rests.
Andrew Jackson

I ask every man and woman in this audience that from this day on they will realize that part of the destiny of America lies in their daily perusal of this Book.
Woodrow Wilson

Within the covers of one single book, the Bible, are all the answers to all the problems that face us today—if only we would read and believe.
Ronald Reagan

“LORD, we confess our sins as individuals and as a nation and turn from our sins and ask You to heal our land.”
