Genesis 5:24: “And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.”

When it says that Enoch “walked with God,” the root word for walked is literally to be conversant. It seems that Enoch, like Adam and Eve, was conversant, had communion, with God intimately. The lesson for us is that God has not changed and He still desires to have conversation and communion with us. That involves talking and listening, or what we may call, prayer and Bible study. Enoch did so and the result was that he walked with God.

The average pair of healthy human feet takes about 8,000 steps a day, 2.5 million steps a year, and walks about 115,000 miles over the course of a lifetime. You thought you were tired, didn’t you? Scripture often refers to the believer’s life as a walk, a journey that requires dedication, courage, and persistence. It calls for self-surrender, fully-yielding one’s life, and intensely desiring to please God rather than self. This spiritual walk is a growing, dynamic exercise of faith. The successful completion of this walk is not dependent on our natural or physical resources. It is dependant upon the strength, leadership, and controlling influence of the Holy Spirit.

There is an amazing statement in the second half of this verse. It says simply, “and he was not, for God took him.” Now there’s an epitaph for someone’s tombstone! The New Testament says this about Enoch:

By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, “and was not found, because God had taken him”; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God. But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. (Heb. 11:5–6)

Enoch was pleasing to God because he had faith. Enoch couldn’t see everything ahead in life, but he had regular communion with God and he trusted Him. So what is it that you would like written on your tombstone? How about walked with God?

“LORD, help us to walk with You this day in Jesus’ name.”
