Luke 24:45: “And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.”
March 7th, 2022 by Pastor Ed in devotionalThere were countless prophecies of the coming Messiah throughout the Old Testament, detailing who He would be and all that He would suffer on the cross. Jesus Himself had told His disciples that He would suffer these things and that He would be raised from the dead on the third day, but they just didn’t get it. Even after His resurrection, when He revealed Himself to them, they “were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit” (Luke 24:37). So He supernaturally opened their minds to receive the truths He taught. We all desperately need God’s help to better understand the Scriptures. The Holy Spirit enables us to be able to understand the things of God, and it is His desire that we grow in that understanding daily. The unbeliever, the “natural man,” can’t understand the things of God, because those things seem too incredible and unlikely. Paul explained it this way:
But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. (1 Cor. 2:14)
That is why we all need to ask God to keep opening our understanding to the spiritual world around us and the workings of His Kingdom. It is of course a process, as God is continually teaching us; our eyes are not immediately opened to everything at once. Part of the adventure of walking with God is the ever-expanding understanding of His Word, His promises, and His desires for our lives. God has called us to a life of continual learning.
“LORD, as we read Your word this day, open our minds to receive something new and fresh from You. And Help us to be obedient to the things we already know, as we grow in grace this day.”
