Leviticus 16:34: “‘This shall be an everlasting statute for you, to make atonement for the children of Israel, for all their sins, once a year.’ And he did as the LORD commanded Moses.”
December 30th, 2022 by Pastor Ed in devotionalLeviticus 16 is a pivotal chapter both theologically and ceremonially. The earlier chapters dealt only with the individual’s need for forgiveness and atonement. Now the corporate uncleanliness of the people is being addressed.
This chapter describes the ceremony of the Day of Atonement or Yom Kippur as it is known today. It was to be performed once a year for the combined sins of the whole nation. Here is also the source of the English concept of the scapegoat, which is a fascinating picture of the exchange of the life of the Son of God for the life of any person who will accept His terms of exchange.
We find in the New Testament, Hebrews 9, that the superior sacrifice of Jesus Christ was offered once-for-all rather than having to be required again each year. In fact, Jesus’ exchange never has to be repeated, and based on that one, perfect sacrifice, all forgiveness of sin, including that of Old Testament believers, was achieved.
“Lord, we remember what it cost You for our salvation and are humbled again. Create in us a clean heart this day so we might serve You well.”
