Psalm 61:1–2: “Hear my cry, O God; / Attend to my prayer. / From the end of the earth I will cry to You, / When my heart is overwhelmed; / Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”

King David knew where to go when he was in trouble. A close examination of this prayer reveals that he was a man who held nothing back. He was completely open and vulnerable before his God. We can feel the strain as he wrote, “from the end of the earth I will cry to You,” meaning God seemed very far away. But he refused to trust his own feelings and continued to cry out to Him. David expressed his reliance on the God who is “the rock that is higher than I.” The term rock is often used to describe God in Scripture. When Jesus told the parable of building our house on a rock, He was speaking of God. When we build on Him, no matter how overwhelming our lives may feel, we will stand firm.

The Golden Gate Bridge is built directly over the San Andreas Fault. During an earthquake, the bridge is designed to sway some 20 feet at the center of its 1-mile span. The secret to the bridge’s resilience, however, lies in more than just its flexibility. By design, every part of the bridge—its concrete roadway, its steel railings, its cross beams—is integrated, from one welded joint to the next, up through an elegant cable system to 2 great towers and 2 great land anchor piers. The bridge, opened in 1937, still stands today because the towers, which bear most of the weight, are deeply embedded down into the bedrock beneath the Pacific, giving it a solid foundation. Our lives are an even greater engineering marvel than that bridge. We are God’s workmanship, and He is the bedrock on which we will stand for all of eternity.

“LORD, we ask for Your help today as we seek to serve You in Your Kingdom.”
