  • Jesus Doesn’t Tremble

Song of Solomon 2:14: “O my dove, in the clefts of the rock, / In the secret places of the cliff, / Let me see your face, / Let me hear your voice; / For your voice is sweet, / And your face is lovely.”

If we treat this verse as most historic Christian expositors do, as Jesus speaking to His beloved church, then He tells us that He will hide us in the clefts of the rock, a rock that symbolizes Jesus Himself. The dove is also a symbol of the Holy Spirit, and so we believers have assurance that God the Holy Spirit is dwelling inside us and that Jesus is the solid foundation we rest our lives upon.

More than 100 years ago, as a Scottish woman spoke confidently about her salvation, someone remarked, “You act as if you were safe and secure on the rock.” She answered, “I am. Sometimes I do tremble on the Rock, but the Rock never trembles under me.” Isn’t that a beautiful comparison between our frailty and God’s strength? Jesus is the Rock that took the judgment for our sins, a judgment we deserved, so that we can rest in Him forever. As King David wrote, “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer” (Ps. 18:1). Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Heb. 13:8). He is unchangeable, unmovable, and stronger than any force that will ever come against us. Jesus, the Rock, will stand forever, and He wants to be our Rock today.

“LORD, we run to You for protection and security, but we also want to be used by You this day. Help us to step out and share Your love with others.”
